NAVY DAY, JUNE 1st

Navy Day is an official Mexican holiday.  The day is held on the June 1st and has been recognized every year since 1942.  It relates to June 1, 1917 when article 32 of the Constitution of the United Mexican States was applied for the first time.  The article states that any vessel flying the Mexican flag must be crewed by seamen who are Mexican by birth, and thus it is a celebration of national pride and identity.  The day is marked throughout the country with special events taking place in many of the sea ports including Puerto Escondido and Puerto Angel on the Sierra Madre del Sur, and in the Caribbean resort of Playa del Carmen.  Events include navy ceremonies in the harbors followed by traditional singing and dancing
