On Thursday, October 3, Akumal was treated to a rare evening of
delicious entertainment, as Bogdan Djukic had three of his friends and fellow
musicians
from
Canada in town to play their Celtic Fusion music at the Lol Ha Beach Bar.
Accompanying Bogdan
were
Shane Cook, Jake Charron, and Stephanie Codman. Bogdan Djukic heads up
Arpason every Thursday evening (in season) in the Lol Ha restaurant; watch
Arpason on YouTube.
Born and raised in Yugoslavia, Bogdan Djukic studied at the Music Academy of Belgrade where he won first prize in three national violin championships. After receiving a grant to study music in Canada, Bogdan moved there permanently in 1999. He has studied classical violin performance on scholarship at the Royal Conservatory of Music
Shane Cook "rates at the top of the short list of the finest fiddlers in the world today," says the Canadian Fiddlers' Hall of Fame. His adventurous playing encompasses an array of fiddle styles, earning him an ECMA for his latest record and multiple Canadian Open and US Grand National fiddle titles. Still in his twenties, Shane has toured extensively across North America as well as Germany, England, China and Taiwan.
Jake Charron is continuing to build a reputation as one of Canada’s finest accompanists for fiddle music. He has become a much sought-after musician for traditional styles, playing piano and guitar with artists across Canada and the United States. Jake graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a degree in Kinesiology.
Stephanie Cadman has been performing since the age of four, delighting audiences with her top-notch Celtic fiddling and dazzling footwork. She appeared as a lead in the musical Swingstep, combining her considerable talents as actor, dancer, singer and fiddler. She then went on to perform in the Mirvish Celtic review Needfire, with the Broadway National Tour of 42nd Street, and was with Anne of Green Gables and Canada Rocks at the Charlottetown Festival. When Stephanie is not on the road with Bowfire she tours with the Celtic dance show The StepCrew and with her own band Celtic Blaze. As a dancer and choreographer, Stephanie is accomplished in tap, Celtic stepdancing, ballet and jazz. At the age of 17 Stephanie won the top female tap dancer at the World Tap Dance Championships in Germany and has won three Canadian stepdancing titles. She has appeared as a dance soloist and Celtic fiddler with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Edmonton, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Seattle and Portland Symphony Orchestras, as well as the Kennedy Center's National Symphony Orchestra.
Needless to say, there was a good turn out for both shows, and a good time was had by all. Thanks, Laura.
